A Mother-Son Graduation Story: Overcoming Challenges Together

Lavenia Zinck and her son Alifereti Raqauqau made a remarkable achievement by graduating together with certificates in housekeeping services from Pacific Polytech in Nabua yesterday. This milestone makes them a rare duo in the educational landscape, as both mother and son received their certificates simultaneously.

Zinck, 40 years old and a mother of five, described the moment as profoundly overwhelming. “I’m extremely pleased and happy to be graduating with my son – it’s rare to have a mother and son graduate together, so I’m proud of our achievement today,” she shared. Their journey was laden with challenges, including financial hardships and housing instability, but these adversities only strengthened their determination to pursue education after a 20-year hiatus.

“We made pies and cooked food to sell to support ourselves,” she explained, reflecting on the innovative ways they sustained their family during tough times. Despite facing eviction, they remained committed to their education, which marked Zinck’s first graduation ceremony. She credited her husband, who operates a fishing business, for supporting her return to school.

When asked for advice for other mothers contemplating education, Zinck emphasized the importance of perseverance, stating, “There’s no age barrier in education and success, so never give up, keep trying.” She believes that passion can drive one to accomplish anything.

The qualification they earned is expected to enhance their living conditions as Zinck seeks stable employment, which she hopes will provide for her family. “My husband will be happy, and I’ll be able to put food on the table as well to help support him,” she indicated, showcasing her dedication to her family’s wellbeing.

This inspiring story echoes the sentiments expressed by other graduates, such as Manaini Lesavua and Salote Maria Taukeisalili, who have also triumphed over challenges while balancing education and motherhood. Their collective narratives highlight the power of family support and the impact of determination in achieving aspirations.

Zinck’s and Raqauqau’s success serves as a powerful reminder that with hard work, resilience, and support from loved ones, fulfilling one’s dreams is indeed possible despite the challenges life presents. It encapsulates a hopeful message for others in similar situations that education can lead to a better future, encouraging a cycle of growth and opportunity for families.
