Beyond the headline

A one-day Board and Governance Workshop delivered by Pacific Board Governance in partnership with FCEF has been announced as a targeted effort to strengthen board oversight and leadership in Fiji amid rising global uncertainty. The workshop, organisers say, will focus on corporate culture, core governance principles and the often delicate relationship between boards and management — areas they describe as central to organisational resilience in an increasingly volatile international environment.

The session will be facilitated by Jenny Seeto, an AICD Fellow whose governance work in the region has included leadership of programs for directors and senior executives. Seeto, who brings both international and local perspectives to the training, emphasised the strategic value of effective governance in the current climate. “In times of global uncertainty, strong board governance is not just a compliance requirement, it is a strategic asset that underpins stability, confidence, and sustained organisational success,” she said.

Organisers say the workshop will go beyond high-level theory by using case studies and practical tools to help participants understand their legal and fiduciary duties as directors. A central aim is to equip board members with clear frameworks for oversight, decision-making and accountability so boards can be proactive rather than reactive when confronting shocks to supply chains, market access or investor confidence.

The announcement explicitly ties the need for improved governance to contemporary geopolitical and economic pressures, including the Middle East conflict, which organisers cite as a reminder that distant events can rapidly affect local operations and markets. The workshop will explore how boards can strengthen risk oversight, update traditional risk models that may quickly become outdated, and build frameworks for continuous monitoring and adaptability in fast-moving environments.

For Fiji-based directors and organisations, the session reinforces an emerging theme in regional governance training: the importance of diverse boards that actively engage in strategic oversight and scenario testing. Strong governance practices, organisers argue, help maintain stakeholder trust — from investors and members to regulators and communities — and provide the confidence needed to make difficult choices such as restructuring or strategic pivots when necessary.

The one-day workshop follows earlier governance initiatives by Pacific Board Governance, which has previously run longer programs in the region and was launched by experienced directors and governance educators including Seeto and David Evans. By partnering with FCEF for this shorter, intensive offering, the organisers aim to broaden uptake among directors and senior managers who need practical, applicable tools to bolster organisational stability and long-term value creation in an uncertain world.
