The Suva Marathon Club has announced the Namosi Challenge 2026, a trail running event set for June 6 in the Namosi Highlands that organisers say will prioritise community, healthy living and support for local schools over competition. The club unveiled the race as part of an expansion beyond its traditional Suva events, capping entries to preserve the quality of the experience and direct funds to Namosi communities.

The challenge will offer three categories: a half marathon (21.1 kilometres), a 10km individual run, and a team relay made up of four runners each completing 10km legs. Amit Ahlawat, president of the Suva Marathon Club, stressed the experiential focus of the event. “This is not about a race or competition,” Ahlawat said. “It’s an incredible experience running into the heart of the Fiji Namosi Highland.” He added the club’s primary goals are promoting fitness and giving back to the local community.

Proceeds from the Namosi Challenge will go towards upgrading infrastructure at primary and secondary schools in Namosi, organisers confirmed. Ahlawat urged participants to contribute beyond entry fees, saying donations would directly support the people and education facilities of the area. Specific details about how funds will be allocated or which schools will benefit have not yet been released.

To ensure a high-quality event and manage the trail environment, the organisers are limiting the field to 500 participants. Registrations are open now for individual runners, with team registrations to be announced soon. The entry cap is intended to control logistics on narrow trail sections, safeguard participant safety and preserve the natural setting for both runners and locals, organisers said.

Founded in 2014–15, the Suva Marathon Club has historically staged events within the capital but is now broadening its footprint to showcase Fiji’s interior landscapes and foster stronger ties with outlying communities. The Namosi Challenge is the club’s latest initiative in that direction, pairing outdoor recreation with social impact and local engagement.

Organisers describe the route as a chance to connect with nature and the people of Namosi rather than chase fast times. Further logistical information—including exact start locations, entry fees, race rules, and plans for team registration—will be released in the coming weeks. With places limited to 500, the club is urging interested runners to register early to secure a spot.
