In the latest development for Fiji’s women’s rugby, the Fijiana XV will take on Tonga in the Oceania Rugby Women’s XV Championship at Churchill Park tomorrow with kickoff scheduled for 4:30pm. Interim head coach Mike Legge said the match comes after a disrupted build-up caused by last week’s cyclone, but stressed the squad has regrouped and is ready to compete.

Legge acknowledged that the storm forced facility closures and caused “a lot of distractions” last week, but said the team returned to work on Saturday and has been training since. “It’s been OK, and it can only get better from here,” he added, praising the players’ resilience in the face of the setback.

A notable feature of the side named for the Tonga clash is the heavy representation from domestic competition: 12 players from the Marama Cup have been included in the Fijiana squad. Legge said that selection reflects a deliberate development pathway for women’s rugby in Fiji and is aimed at strengthening depth across the programme. “Giving a pathway to our Marama players… it’s massive for our development and you will see a few debuts against Tonga,” he said, signalling that several newcomers may make their international bow.

The blend of emerging talent and established campaigners is intended to build continuity and long-term strength for the national side. Legge said the coaching staff used the truncated preparation period to focus on depth and giving opportunities to players outside the usual Fijiana XV core. The inclusion of so many Marama Cup players underscores an emphasis on local talent and domestic competitions as feeders for the national team.

On the field, Legge warned fans to expect a bruising encounter. He described Tonga as likely to produce a “physical” contest and said his primary concern is maintaining the processes that have underpinned the team’s recent performances. “It’s important for us to maintain momentum from the Wallaroos match,” he said, referencing Fiji’s previous outing against Australia’s Wallaroos and signalling the desire to build on that level of performance.

Tomorrow’s match at Churchill Park provides both a testing ground for the new faces and an opportunity for Fiji to assert home advantage despite the disruption caused by adverse weather. With kickoff confirmed for 4:30pm, Legge says the Fijiana are determined to overcome recent challenges and use the game to continue their development trajectory ahead of the rest of the Oceania Championship.
