Latest: Government Shipping Services vessel MV Bai Ni Takali has departed on a scheduled franchise run to the Yasawa Group, with the Ministry of Public Works, Meteorological Services and Transport confirming key movement and loading details for the voyage this week.
The ministry said the vessel began its journey from Suva on April 12 and arrived in Lautoka the following day to prepare for the franchise run. Loading operations in Lautoka were carried out between 9am and 4.30pm on April 13, after which the MV Bai Ni Takali departed once all cargo was secured. The ministry described the trip as part of ongoing efforts to maintain reliable maritime transport services to remote island communities.
The Bai Ni Takali is scheduled to call at a string of island communities across the Yasawa Group. Planned stops listed by the ministry include Yalobi, Viwa, Nacula, Navotua, Naisisili, Bukama and Yasawa-i-Rara. These scheduled calls aim to deliver goods, supplies and maintain lifeline connections for residents and businesses on the islands.
Franchise runs such as this one form a core part of Government Shipping Services’ mandate to provide regular, subsidised maritime links between major ports and outer islands. For many communities in the Yasawas, government-operated sailings are essential for receiving food, fuel, building materials and other necessities that are not readily available locally, as well as for enabling travel and commerce.
The ministry did not provide passenger or cargo manifests but emphasised that departures follow standard safety and loading checks in port before a vessel leaves. Weather remains a constant operational consideration for inter-island services, and the Meteorological Services component of the ministry works with shipping operators to advise on sea conditions ahead of scheduled sailings.
This movement follows routine scheduling for franchise runs and comes as part of the ministry’s stated commitment to sustaining maritime connections to Fiji’s outlying islands. Further updates on the MV Bai Ni Takali’s progress, including any timing changes to the island calls, would normally be issued should there be operational or weather-related adjustments.
