From Streets to Success: A Journey of Transformation in Fiji’s Youth

A former street youth who battled drug addiction for five years, Marika Tagicakibau, has turned his life around, achieving a significant milestone by graduating from Pacific Polytech with a Certificate in Panel Beating at its Suva campus. At the age of 20, Tagicakibau was one of more than 20 former street youths who celebrated their graduation alongside him.

Reflecting on his journey, Tagicakibau credited divine intervention for his opportunity at Pacific Polytech, stating, “If we did not receive God at that time, I wouldn’t know if we would come to this school. But that was all God’s plan.” His path to recovery began when he joined Team Gideon, a youth group formed under the All Nations Christian Fellowship, which provided him with community support and guidance.

Pastor Joe Tabuya, who serves as a counselor at All Nations Christian Fellowship, emphasized the importance of community support in facilitating the change for these youth. He noted that many of them had faced substantial hardships but proved that change is possible with the right guidance and opportunities.

Minister for Environment and Climate Change Mosese Bulitavu, who attended as the chief guest, commended the youth group’s efforts and encouraged others still facing challenges on the streets to pursue similar educational opportunities, reinforcing the possibility of a brighter future for these individuals. He pointed out that the newly graduated youths are now equipped to find meaningful employment and contribute positively to their communities.

This uplifting story reflects a broader narrative of hope and transformation among at-risk youth in Fiji. Similar initiatives, such as the Tagane Mai Program, highlight the significance of community-driven efforts to empower young individuals and provide them with essential life skills and education.

The collective focus on skill development and the support of local organizations demonstrate a community commitment to uplifting marginalized youth and fostering a supportive environment for their growth. Each success story serves as a reminder that, through perseverance, education, and faith, a brighter future is achievable for all.
