Beyond the headline

A pair of troughs of low pressure will keep much of Fiji wet and unsettled over the next 24 to 48 hours, with showers spreading from the west and pockets of heavy rain and thunderstorms expected across several island groups. One trough continues to affect eastern Viti Levu while a second, more active trough moves in from the west, bringing increasing rain from later today and into Wednesday.

The Yasawa and Mamanuca groups, Kadavu, Lau and Lomaiviti are likely to see occasional showers with isolated heavy falls and thunderstorm activity, with showers becoming more frequent and turning to rain from later today. Viti Levu and Vanua are at risk of afternoon and evening thunderstorms accompanied by heavy falls. Elsewhere across the group expect cloudy periods with some showers and isolated thunderstorms as rain develops from the west and spreads island-wide.

Localised heavy falls may lead to flash flooding of low-lying and flood-prone areas, so residents in those locations should take care and monitor conditions. Winds will be moderate to fresh from the north to northwest, with seas moderate to rough around exposed areas. Mariners and beachgoers should be cautious while conditions are unsettled.

Looking ahead to Wednesday, most places can expect occasional rain and isolated thunderstorms with heavy falls, although rain should gradually clear from the west later in the day. Winds are forecast to remain moderate to fresh from the north before tending more southwesterly later on; seas will stay moderate to rough through the period. Temperatures are generally in the low to mid 20s overnight, rising to around 30–32°C by daytime across the main islands.

Rotuma will remain comparatively fine apart from brief showers, with moderate easterly winds and moderate seas. Expected temperatures there are in the mid-20s to low 30s.
