A Rakiraki man has launched a public plea after his 23-foot fibreglass boat and its outboard engine were stolen on Thursday night, leaving his family without their primary means of livelihood. Joape Bainivalu of Naivuvuni village said he has spent the past two days searching for the vessel and is urgently asking anyone with information to come forward.
“Please, I’m begging you people to help. That is the only thing that helps my family here in the village,” Mr Bainivalu told this newsroom, describing the theft as a devastating blow for his household. He said the boat, which he described as relatively new, was called AUSVISION JNR and was fitted with a 60-horsepower outboard engine.
The boat’s size and engine make it a valuable asset for coastal families who rely on fishing and small-scale commercial work. Mr Bainivalu said the loss has left his family without income and has heightened anxiety in the Naivuvuni community, where small fibreglass skiffs are a common livelihood tool.
Mr Bainivalu is appealing to residents across Rakiraki and neighbouring areas to be alert for the AUSVISION JNR and its distinctive 60hp motor. He asked anyone who may have seen the boat, been offered it for sale, or has other relevant information to contact him directly on 2909853 or 2110187.
Coastal communities in Fiji often depend on small vessels for fishing, transport and subsistence; thefts of boats and engines can therefore have an outsized economic and social impact. Local owners typically keep a close watch on landing sites and wharves, and Mr Bainivalu’s public appeal seeks to mobilise that neighbourhood vigilance in the hope of a quick recovery.
At this stage Mr Bainivalu has not reported any recovery and is relying on tips from the public. He reiterated his plea for assistance, saying the vessel and engine are the family’s only means to support themselves and asking anyone with information to make contact through the numbers provided.
