Beyond the headline

A pair of troughs of low pressure are affecting Fiji, with one bringing cloud and showers to eastern Viti Levu and a more active trough expected to move in from the west. Showers and thunderstorms will increase across the group from later today, with isolated heavy falls possible in several island groups.

The Yasawa and Mamanuca groups, Kadavu, and the Lau and Lomaiviti groups can expect occasional showers with isolated heavy falls and the chance of thunderstorms, with showers becoming more frequent and turning to rain from later today. Elsewhere, most parts will see cloudy periods with some showers and isolated thunderstorms as rain develops in the west and spreads across the group. Afternoon and evening thunderstorms with heavy falls are expected over parts of Viti Levu and Vanua Levu.

Localised heavy falls may lead to flash flooding in low-lying and flood-prone areas, so residents in susceptible locations should be prepared for rapidly rising water during intense downpours. Winds are forecast to be moderate to fresh from the north to northwest with seas moderate to rough. Conditions are expected to remain unsettled into Tuesday, with rain and isolated thunderstorms continuing and a gradual wind shift to the southwest later in the day.

Regional notes: Navua, Suva and Nausori will see cloudy periods with some showers, with afternoon or evening thunderstorms and heavy falls expected and rain becoming more widespread from later today (min 23°C, max 30°C). Nadi, Lautoka and Ba will have cloudy periods with showers and isolated thunderstorms, with rain developing later (min 23°C, max 32°C). Sigatoka and the Coral Coast, Yasawa/Mamanuca, Tavua/Rakiraki, Labasa, Savusavu, Nabouwalu, Taveuni, Lau/Lomaiviti and Kadavu are all forecast to see showers with the chance of isolated heavy falls and thunderstorms as rain gradually develops; most locations should see conditions ease to showers or clear later in the following day, with typical overnight lows around 23°C and daytime highs near 30–32°C depending on the district.

Rotuma remains under an easterly wind flow and is generally fine apart from brief showers, with moderate easterly winds and moderate seas (min 25°C, max 32°C), and only brief showers expected into Tuesday.
