Empowering Weavers: Women Unite for Creative Growth in Fiji

Weaving Dreams: Empowering Women Through Art and Innovation in Fiji

A recent women empowerment initiative in Lautoka gathered 38 women from communities along the Nadi-Ba corridor to participate in a workshop emphasizing both traditional and contemporary weaving techniques. Hosted by the Lifebread Stay Connected Foundation (Fiji) at its Tagaloli, Teidamu premises from March 4 to 7, the workshop coincided with celebrations for International Women’s Day.

Throughout the four-day event, participants learned the traditional art of weaving using voivoi, or dried pandanus leaves, crafting various items such as baskets and five types of traditional mats—Voli-Koro, Ibe-vaka Daligana, Ibe Papua, Vaka-bati, and Coco. In addition, several attendees showcased their creativity by making earrings from voivoi leaves, illustrating the innovative potential of traditional materials in contemporary fashion.

The skills developed during this workshop not only enhanced personal growth but also opened up new income-generating opportunities for the women, promoting financial stability for their families. One participant, Loraini from Ba, expressed her excitement about the workshop, highlighting how it inspired her to improve the packaging of her products, including hand-printed sarongs and garments for her small business.

At the workshop’s conclusion, participants were awarded ‘Certificates of Participation’, recognizing their commitment and hard work. Adi Litiana Sovasova, vice president of Soqosoqo Vakamarama Yasana-O-Ba, officiated the event and praised the women’s dedication while encouraging them to pursue further training opportunities that foster innovation. She noted the potential for the creative products developed during the workshop to enhance economic empowerment and establish a sustainable future for their families.

This workshop is part of a broader curriculum by the Lifebread Stay Connected Foundation aimed at equipping women with craft skills, underscoring the value of creativity and entrepreneurship among women in Fiji.

The success of this initiative inspires hope for continued efforts in empowering women across various communities, enabling them to uplift themselves and contribute positively to society. By investing in skill development and fostering creativity, such events are paving the way for a brighter future for women throughout Fiji.
