Students Under Scrutiny: The Debate Over After-School Policies

Opposition MP Rinesh Sharma is urging the government to reconsider the “no loitering” policy for students in school uniforms after school hours. During his address in Parliament, he emphasized the importance of keeping students off the streets after 5 PM, where they might be exposed to potential dangers and negative influences.

Sharma highlighted concerns over rising incidents of vandalism, substance abuse, and violence, citing that congregating in public areas could foster such behaviors. He noted that there have been alarming reports of students threatening and physically assaulting teachers, behaviors that he feels were less prevalent during his own school days.

The MP argues that enforcing a loitering policy could not only enhance student safety but also instill a greater sense of accountability among them. With students under the care of their parents once they return home, he believes that expectations around their behavior need to be clearly defined. Additionally, he mentions that if students are found violating the policy, it should be within the rights of authorities to hold them accountable, even involving parents when necessary.

Sharma also suggested a reevaluation of the free education system, proposing that if education is free, attendance should be mandatory. “We cannot have a situation where students are at home or loitering instead of being in school,” he stated.

This discussion comes alongside recent observations about the concerning rise in dropout rates among students, with calls from other opposition MPs for innovative solutions to reverse such trends.

Sharma’s proposals reflect a growing recognition of the interconnected issues of student behavior, safety, and educational engagement—a situation that, if addressed collectively by schools, parents, and the government, could result in a more positive environment for students to thrive in. His comments encourage a proactive approach to fostering accountability which, in turn, may help curb the tide of negative behaviors seen among youth today.
