Reviving Connections: Lomaloma Jetty Reopens to Boost Vanuabalavu Island’s Economy

The reopening of Lomaloma Jetty on Vanuabalavu Island is expected to greatly enhance the local community’s economic activities and improve their connections to the mainland. Officially reopened on May 4, this facility had been closed since 2021 due to damage from seawater exposure.

According to the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA), the jetty serves as an essential lifeline for over 780 residents, facilitating transportation for both passengers and cargo. The reopening of the jetty will enable regular maritime services, including franchise vessel operations, private trips, and government shipping services. This development was described as a critical milestone in restoring vital transportation links.

Lau Provincial Administrator Iakobo Waqanidrola expressed gratitude for this long-awaited improvement in infrastructure. He stated that the jetty’s reopening not only mends the logistical gap experienced by islanders for the past two years but also serves as a significant boost for tourism, enhancing their port of entry.

This revitalization is consistent with broader infrastructure improvements seen across Fiji, such as new jetties in other islands like Rotuma, aimed at enhancing connectivity and supporting economic growth. Efforts such as these demonstrate a commitment to bridging urban and island communities, promoting accessibility while fostering local economies.

As the island community looks forward to a more connected and prosperous future, the reopening of Lomaloma Jetty signifies a hopeful turning point for continued economic development and improved quality of life.
