Maritime Crisis: What Led to the Lomaiviti Princess II Sinking?

The Minister for Transport, Ro Filipe Tuisawau, is awaiting a comprehensive report regarding the recent sinking of Goundar’s shipping vessel, the Lomaiviti Princess II, in Suva port. This event has raised concerns about the standard operational protocols in place when towing vessels from ports. Tuisawau expressed apprehension regarding the necessary procedures that should have been adhered to during the towing process.

The incident has become contentious as Goundar Shipping accuses the Fiji Ports Authority of towing the vessel from its berth illegally, which they allege led to its capsizing. Tuisawau stated, “I do not have the details. But it’s a concern from my side as a minister as to what actually happened. And that shouldn’t have happened,” indicating that accountability will hinge on the findings of the official report.

He pointed out that past safety incidents involving the Lomaiviti Princess II, such as running aground while on a regular journey, amplify the need for improved maritime safety measures. Currently, work is ongoing to remove other derelict vessels from the Suva Harbour. The government remains committed to maintaining a clean and safe port environment, and as Tuisawau noted, proactive management is critical in preserving the integrity of the maritime ecosystem and ensuring the safety of navigational routes.

This situation presents a crucial opportunity for strengthening regulations and operational protocols within Fiji’s maritime industry. By addressing these safety challenges, the government aims to foster a safer maritime environment, helping to protect both local communities and marine life. The anticipation for improved safety standards is a hopeful outcome of the ongoing investigations into this incident, signaling a commitment to enhanced maritime governance.
