Employment Minister Agni Deo Singh has reiterated Fiji’s commitment to ensuring fair work conditions and social justice during his address at the 113th International Labour Conference in Geneva. Singh focused on significant reforms aimed at enhancing labor rights, including a comprehensive review of the Employment Relations Act 2007, currently under scrutiny by the Solicitor General’s Office ahead of its expected parliamentary presentation in August.
The proposed legislative changes are designed to fortify worker protections, establish fair practices, and streamline dispute resolution processes. Singh emphasized that these reforms are the culmination of extensive collaboration among unions, employers, and various stakeholders, highlighting Fiji’s commitment to aligning its practices with international labor standards.
In addition, Singh detailed ongoing enhancements to compensation laws that will cover injured workers, extending even to schoolchildren who suffer injuries at educational institutions. Notably, the recent raise of the minimum wage by 25% and the reactivation of Tripartite Wages Councils reflect the government’s resolve to support labor rights.
A significant achievement cited was the resolution of the Vatukoula Gold Mine strike, which spanned 33 years—remarked as the longest industrial dispute globally. A settlement worth $9.2 million will benefit 368 workers and their families, signifying a notable step in Fiji’s labor relations history.
Minister Singh expressed gratitude to the International Labour Organization (ILO) for its continued support in guiding Fiji towards labor law synchronization with global standards, reinforcing the ongoing dialogue between the government, employers, and labor organizations.
These reforms not only signify progress in the labor sector but also promise to elevate the socioeconomic conditions for Fiji’s citizens, advocating for a fair and equitable workforce. This collaborative approach has the potential to foster a healthier labor environment that benefits both workers and employers alike, paving the way for a positive future in Fiji’s employment landscape.
