Mikaele Ravalaca, a promising local boxer, has been forced to withdraw from his upcoming Super Featherweight title fight against John Ingram scheduled for this Saturday due to an injury sustained from a recent altercation, as confirmed by ZEG Kings Boxing promoter Nahroon Buksh. Buksh emphasized the importance of safety in the sport, stating, “A boxer’s life is very precious. We don’t want to repeat what happened last year,” referencing a tragic incident involving another boxer.
Ravalaca has sustained a serious head injury, which requires time to heal, and although he was eager to fight, health and safety considerations took precedence. In his absence, Ratu Rakuro Daunivavana will step in to compete against Dane Edge from New Zealand, giving him an exciting opportunity to shine.
The boxing event will be held at the Vodafone Arena in Suva and is set to feature a total of ten professional bouts and six exhibition matches. Highlighting the event is a significant match where Junior Binnu Singh will take on Australia’s Runqi Zhou for the coveted WBA Oceania Super Bantamweight title, marking a historic first WBA title fight to take place in Fiji. Additionally, James Singh will fight Semi Daloloma for the BCF Heavyweight title, and a female bout between Sera Bolatini and Connie Chan for the WBA Oceania title will also be showcased.
This event signifies a substantial opportunity for local boxing, fostering community engagement and elevating the sport’s profile in Fiji, despite recent setbacks. The anticipation surrounding the fights reflects a strong support for local talents and the growth of boxing as an important part of Fiji’s sporting landscape.
