Russia has announced plans to hold the next round of direct talks with Ukraine in Istanbul on June 2, aimed at achieving a sustainable peace settlement, according to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. However, there was no immediate response from Ukraine on this proposal.

This new initiative comes amid ongoing pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump to bring an end to what has become the most severe conflict in Europe since World War II. Earlier in May, representatives from both countries met in Istanbul—the first face-to-face discussions since March 2022, shortly after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Unfortunately, those talks did not lead to an agreement on a ceasefire, despite calls from Kyiv and its Western allies. Russia indicated that it would require certain conditions to be met before agreeing to a cessation of hostilities.

Lavrov expressed hope that all sincere parties would support the upcoming negotiations in Istanbul. Following a conversation between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin on May 19, Putin stated that Russia was prepared to draft a memorandum for potential peace arrangements with Ukraine.

Meanwhile, Vladimir Medinsky, the head of Russia’s delegation for peace talks, communicated with Ukraine’s Defense Minister Rustem Umerov to discuss the timing and location of the next meeting.

In previous discussions, both sides have struggled with key issues, particularly Ukraine’s push for an unconditional ceasefire amid intensifying violence and NATO’s increasing military involvement. The current diplomatic push is seen as crucial for laying the groundwork for a potential resolution, given the ongoing challenges posed by the conflict and the involvement of foreign troops alongside Russian forces.

Despite the adversities, the renewed dialogue offers a flicker of hope for both nations. The commitment to diplomatic engagement reinforces the notion that through continued negotiations and international support, a pathway toward long-term peace may be achievable, fostering stability in the region.
