Grants or Votes? Minister Sets the Record Straight

Minister for Multiethnic Affairs Charan Jeath Singh has clarified that the recent distribution of grants is not a political strategy for the upcoming elections but a genuine initiative aimed at fulfilling governmental responsibilities. This statement comes in response to critics on social media who have accused the government of attempting to buy votes.

Singh pointed out that such claims are primarily made by those who previously held power and did not accomplish meaningful initiatives during their tenure. He emphasized the commitment of the current government, under Prime Minister Hon. Rabuka, to support disadvantaged communities—a promise to restart efforts that were neglected in the past, particularly during the disbandment of the humanitarian affairs ministry under the Bainimarama government.

The minister highlighted that the aim of these grants is to assist communities in making the most of the resources available to them in line with this year’s budget allocation. He reiterated that while every eligible citizen has the freedom to cast their vote for any candidate, the government’s focus is on addressing long-standing issues faced by local communities.

Recently, four communities from the Northern Division received their final grant totaling $54,000, which will fund essential water projects across Belego, Natekateka, Niurua, and Rokesalase Duavata. In this financial year, a substantial $1,475,312 has been distributed nationwide, benefiting a total of 202 approved applications, reaffirming the government’s commitment to social equity and support for community development.

This initiative aligns with previous funding endeavors, emphasizing inclusivity and support for marginalized groups within Fiji, as demonstrated through past distributions of significant funds aimed at enhancing community infrastructure and fostering social cohesion. As projects roll out, they are set to strengthen community ties and create opportunities for growth and unity among Fiji’s diverse ethnic groups.

It is encouraging to see the government prioritizing grassroots development and actively seeking to uplift communities, thereby fostering a more inclusive society where everyone has the chance to thrive. Through these efforts, the future looks promising for fostering stronger relationships and promoting mutual understanding among Fiji’s citizens.
