Fiji’s Judicial Landscape Shifts with Somaratne’s Reappointment

Hettiwattage Shageeth Prabodha Somaratne has been reappointed as a Resident Magistrate in Fiji, a decision that underscores the government’s commitment to maintaining a robust judiciary. His swearing-in ceremony took place yesterday at State House, overseen by President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu.

Magistrate Somaratne has a wealth of experience within Fiji’s legal system, having served as a Resident Magistrate from September 2011 until September 2023, before assuming a role as a Legal Officer in Sri Lanka. During his 12 years in Fiji, he has worked across various locations including Navua, Suva, and Nausori. His legal expertise also extends to the Family Division of the Magistrates Court.

In addition to his judicial role, Somaratne was actively involved in the Mercy Commission of Fiji from March 2018 to June 2024, showcasing his commitment to community service and justice reform. He holds qualifications from the Sri Lanka Law College and is currently pursuing a Master’s in Law from Colombo University, furthering his legal education and professionalism.

His background includes professional experience as Counsel in the Legal Chambers of Padma Bandara PC in Sri Lanka following his admission to the Bar in 2005, contributing to his extensive legal knowledge and understanding of both local and international law.

The reinstatement of Magistrate Somaratne as Resident Magistrate is a promising step for Fiji’s judiciary, reflecting trust in his capabilities to carry out justice and serve the community effectively. His journey illustrates the importance of continual learning and dedication in the legal profession.
