Empowering Fijian Women: Breaking Barriers in Business and Beyond

Women are essential players in Fiji’s small business sector, particularly in market vending, where they significantly contribute to the economy. Despite their vital roles, many women face substantial hurdles, including limited access to resources, unsafe working environments, and issues of gender-based violence.

During a recent event in Nadi that celebrated these contributions, Border Police Airport Inspector Apikale Bari emphasized the need for safe working conditions and equitable wages. She urged local governments and businesses to join forces to protect women from exploitation, acknowledging that they are often the backbone of commerce in Fiji. Bari stated, “Women have always been the backbone of trade and commerce… yet many face challenges such as limited access to capital and gender discrimination.”

Further addressing these pressing concerns, Women Crisis Center Counselor Advocate Ilisapeci Maria noted that, although women are honored on International Women’s Day, their fight for safety, dignity, and empowerment is a continuous struggle. She pointed out the pressures women face daily, from managing household responsibilities to returning home with the expectation of financial accountability, often facing violence if they fall short.

Maria stressed the importance of everyday acknowledgment and empowerment beyond just one day of celebration. By implementing mentorship programs, skill development workshops, and networking opportunities, women can gain the necessary knowledge and confidence to expand their businesses and combat the challenges they face.

This aligns with broader discussions in similar articles highlighting ongoing efforts by leaders to foster gender equality and empower women economically. Initiatives from government bodies emphasize that investing in women leads to not only social progress but increased productivity and overall economic growth.

There is an optimistic air as Fiji continues to push for gender equality and women’s empowerment initiatives, promising more inclusive and equitable opportunities for all women in the future.
