Fiji’s Education Sector Set for Major Teacher Salary Upgrade

Minister for Education Aseri Radrodro announced in Parliament that nearly 400 teachers are set to receive salary upgrades, following a significant commitment to recognize their service and qualifications. Specifically, 296 teachers benefited from increases during the December pay period last year due to upgraded qualifications, while 103 Assistant Principals experienced a change from Band H, Step 1 to Band H, Step 2.

Radrodro expressed his appreciation for the positive feedback he has received from Assistant Principals regarding their upgraded salaries. He further articulated the ministry’s commitment to enhancing the compensation for approximately 400 more teachers who have dedicated 20 to 30 years to the profession and currently earn around $22,000 annually. These educators, who graduated during a time when teaching qualifications were limited to certificates or diplomas, have their extensive experience valued, especially as many have served in rural areas which limited further educational opportunities.

The Minister emphasized the importance of collaboration with teacher unions to implement initiatives aimed at retaining skilled educators, especially in the face of recent “massive resignations” attributed to better job opportunities elsewhere. He noted the crucial role timely transfers play for rural teachers, facilitating access to further study and professional development.

These salary upgrades represent a proactive approach by the government to honor teachers’ commitments and improve overall morale within the education sector. With previous measures already in place, such as substantial financial boosts and phased salary adjustments for teachers with over 20 years of service, these initiatives reflect an ongoing dedication to investing in education and the professional growth of educators.

Overall, this progression in salary upgrades and planned initiatives signifies a hopeful future for the teaching profession in Fiji, reinforcing the value and impact teachers have on the nation’s youth and the broader community.
