Sikeli Vula, the president of the Nadi Netball Association, has voiced deep concerns about the future of netball players in Nadi as the association prepares for a Special General Meeting (SGM) of Netball Fiji this Saturday. Vula’s urgent message underscores the uncertainty faced by players aiming for national representation, particularly with regards to Fiji’s qualification for the upcoming Commonwealth Games.
Vula, who has no personal grievances against the current executive, stressed the necessity for clarity and support for the players. He stated, “I cannot be lying or giving false hope to tell them ‘waqe vakaikai’ (play your best).” His comments reflect the collective worries expressed by 15 presidents from various netball associations across Fiji, who are advocating for the SGM in response to growing dissatisfaction with Netball Fiji’s leadership. This coalition is seeking a vote of no confidence in the current executive committee and is pushing for interim leadership to guide the sport in a more positive direction.
The call for the SGM highlights a broader desire within the Fiji netball community for improved governance and accountability. Similar concerns were echoed by Alumeci Vosararawa-Sachs, president of the Suva Netball Association, who pointed out the lack of adequate support from Netball Fiji, particularly in developmental initiatives for clubs like Nadi and Lautoka.
While attempts to reach RubyAnn Sorovaki, president of Netball Fiji, for comment on the situation have gone unanswered, the prevailing sentiment in the netball community is one of hope for positive change. Vula believes the movement advocating for Nadi’s young players could signal the start of a revitalization within netball in Fiji, encouraging the leadership to address the pressing concerns.
This crucial moment can serve as a catalyst for meaningful reforms that not only benefit players but also strengthen the overall netball culture in Fiji, paving the way for a promising future in the sport.
