Fiji Embraces Wheelchair Rugby: A New Era for Parasports

The Fiji Paralympic Committee is making strides in the parasports sector by securing eight specialized rugby wheelchairs, which are scheduled to arrive in the coming months. This initiative, led by Committee President Shaenaz Voss, marks a significant effort toward formalizing wheelchair rugby as an exciting addition to Fiji’s sports landscape.

The inspiration for this new venture arose from discussions with various stakeholders and was particularly influenced by New Caledonia’s recent establishment of a wheelchair rugby program, despite the sport not being traditionally played in the region. The collaboration gained momentum following productive talks with the French Embassy in Fiji, resulting in the donation of the wheelchairs, as well as support for their servicing and the provision of components and parts.

Voss emphasized the progressive nature of wheelchair rugby at the Olympic level, noting that teams can field both male and female athletes in competitions, thereby promoting inclusivity in a typically male-dominated sport. Additionally, rugby legend Waisale Serevi has pledged his support for the initiative, further bolstering its credibility and outreach.

As the Fiji Paralympic Committee prepares for the arrival of the wheelchairs, it will focus on finding a suitable training venue to kickstart their program. The potential impact this initiative may have on the local community is promising, offering athletes with disabilities a platform to participate in competitive sports, gain visibility, and encourage a culture of inclusivity across Fiji.

The introduction of wheelchair rugby represents not only a new sports opportunity but also a hopeful pathway toward greater recognition of parasports in Fiji. As efforts continue to evolve in this direction, it is anticipated that the sport will inspire broader engagement and support for athletes with disabilities, highlighting the importance of inclusivity in physical activities.
