Fiji Airways has announced temporary schedule adjustments to selected international services as it responds to rising fuel costs and ongoing global geopolitical pressures, the airline said on Thursday. The changes, designed to preserve reliable operations across the network, will affect services to Brisbane and the United States while most of Fiji Airways’ routes remain unchanged.
From April 25, the carrier will temporarily suspend services FJ922 (Nadi to Brisbane) and FJ923 (Brisbane to Nadi). Fiji Airways said a daily service between Nadi and Brisbane will continue to operate to maintain connectivity between Fiji and Queensland, but did not disclose how long the suspension of the specific flight numbers will last.
On the Dallas–Fort Worth route the airline will retain two weekly services between May 5 and June 16, but Tuesday flights operating as FJ891 (Nadi to Dallas–Fort Worth) and FJ890 (Dallas–Fort Worth to Nadi) will be paused for about seven weeks. The airline said the temporary reduction is aimed at balancing schedule reliability and commercial demand amid higher operating costs.
Fiji Airways said affected customers will be contacted directly and offered alternative travel arrangements. The carrier emphasised support for its trade partners, saying in a statement: “Fiji Airways remains committed to transparent communication and to supporting our trade partners in delivering the best possible outcomes for our shared customers.” No further commercial compensation details were provided in the announcement.
The move comes as airlines worldwide continue to grapple with elevated jet fuel prices and the knock-on effects of geopolitical tensions on route planning and operating costs. Fiji Airways’ update follows a series of operational pressures earlier this year: in January the airline imposed limits on flights to Funafuti and Vava’u because of local fuel supply constraints, and late last year it apologised for a disruption to an Auckland service during peak holiday travel. The carrier has also been investing in its fleet—Fiji Link received a new ATR turboprop in January in a bid to bolster regional connectivity.
Travel agents and passengers with bookings to Brisbane or Dallas–Fort Worth are advised to monitor communications from the airline and their booking channels. Fiji Airways said the majority of its international and domestic network is unaffected by the temporary adjustments and that it is working to minimise disruption for affected travellers.
This is the latest development in an evolving operational picture for the region’s largest carrier, which must balance growth and connectivity objectives with rising input costs and external pressures. The airline has not provided a timeline for a return to the suspended Brisbane services beyond saying the changes are temporary.
