Wrecked Vessel Sparks Environmental Alarm: Investigation Launched!

Minister for Public Works, Meteorological Services, and Transport, Ro Filipe Tuisawau, has initiated a comprehensive investigation into the recent sinking of the Lomaiviti Princess II in Suva Harbour. The minister condemned the “sheer recklessness” associated with the vessel’s management and operations.

The Lomaiviti Princess II had been anchored at Narain Jetty since 2019 but capsized and sank after being towed out of the port by Fiji Ports Corporation Limited, which has raised significant environmental concerns due to an oil spill that resulted from the incident. The vessel is currently submerged in nearly two meters of water, creating navigational hazards and threats to the marine environment.

In response to the situation, oil containment booms have been deployed around the wreckage to prevent the further spread of oil, along with dispersants being used to minimize harm to marine life. Authorities are monitoring the area closely for any additional leaks.

The Joint Maritime Environment Protection Committee, which includes representatives from the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF), Fiji Ports Corporation Limited (FPCL), the Department of Transport, and the Fiji Police Force, is coordinating response efforts. Plans are underway to refloat and reposition the LP II to clear the navigation channel, with subsequent removal of the wreck being a priority for restoring safe harbour operations. The government is also contemplating the involvement of the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) should the situation worsen.

This incident follows earlier safety concerns regarding the Lomaiviti Princess II, which had previously run aground while on a routine journey, prompting discussions about the need for improved maritime safety protocols. Maritime authorities remain hopeful that these investigations will lead to better safety standards and practices. Improving oversight and regulations could pave the way for enhanced safety measures that benefit passengers and maritime operations across Fiji’s waters.
