Virimi Vakatawa is set to make his debut for the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua this Saturday, and head coach Glen Jackson is eager to showcase the player’s abilities in the highly competitive environment of Super Rugby. When asked if the former French international could thrive in this high-intensity setting, Jackson confidently responded, “We’ll tell you on Saturday,” referencing their opening match against Moana Pasifika in the 2026 Shop N Save Super Rugby Pacific.

Jackson underscored the significance of Vakatawa’s extensive experience, which includes playing in the Six Nations Rugby competition and earning the title of European Player of the Year. His wealth of knowledge is expected to greatly enhance the backline and support players such as Tuidraki Samusamuvodre in the midfield. Jackson noted, “To have his experience from Six Nations and what he’s done overseas is a great asset for Tuidraki, creating a strong centre partnership.”

After retiring from professional rugby in September 2022 due to a cardiac issue with Top 14 club Racing 92, there were concerns about Vakatawa’s health. The medical condition, which was identified prior to the 2019 Rugby World Cup, was deemed a significant risk by the team’s medical staff. However, Jackson remains optimistic about Vakatawa’s contributions to the team. He praises the player’s calm demeanor, which he believes will positively influence the younger players on the team. “He’s still got unbelievable touches of class, but just his cool head around our young team makes things really well,” Jackson said.

With a strong work ethic and determination, Vakatawa is eager to hit the field. “He’s fit, he’s chomping at the bit, and I’m really excited to see him run out for the Drua,” Jackson declared. The team is set to face Moana Pasifika at 3.30pm at Churchill Park in Lautoka, marking a promising start to their Super Rugby campaign. Fans and supporters are looking forward to seeing how Vakatawa and the team will perform.
