The iTaukei Land Trust Board (TLTB) has issued a stern warning against any unlawful interference with land leased to Goodman Fielder International (Fiji) Pte Ltd (GFIL) in Nakelo, indicating such actions could lead to contempt of court charges. This response comes after Mr. Jiutasa Bilavucu from Vunivaivai Village alleged that the land in question is iTaukei reserve land and that the TLTB acted unlawfully in granting the lease to GFIL.
The TLTB has unequivocally dismissed these allegations as false and misleading, underscoring that they are unsupported by historical records or any court decisions. The legal status of the land has already been thoroughly adjudicated by the High Court, which ruled that earlier challenges from Mataqali Vico and Mataqali Namara were unfounded. The court concluded that TLTB’s actions were lawful and in the best interests of the landowners after comprehensive consultations.
In addition, a 2019 High Court ruling reaffirmed GFIL’s right to quiet enjoyment of the leased land and prohibited Mr. Bilavucu, along with the other mataqali, from unlawfully interrupting GFIL’s operations on the property. TLTB emphasized that any violation of these court injunctions would be a serious breach of legal directives.
The Board cautioned that further interference with GFIL’s business could result in legal action, including penalties such as fines and imprisonment for those who violate court orders. TLTB also highlighted that extensive consultations have already taken place with mataqali representatives, government officials, and community members regarding the lease.
Reaffirming its commitment to legal compliance and transparency, TLTB advised all parties involved to address any concerns through appropriate legal channels rather than taking unilateral actions. The Board remains resolute in its mission to protect the interests of landowners while ensuring adherence to the law.
