Rising Star: Baselala’s Unexpected Path to Represent Fiji’s Rugby Future

Swire Shipping Fijian Drua halfback Phillip Baselala is poised to represent the FIJI Water Flying Fijians later this year, thanks to an impressive performance during the Drua’s 38-7 victory over the Western Force in his final home match in Lautoka.

At just 20 years old, Baselala has received accolades not only from enthusiastic fans but also from Drua head coach Glen Jackson, who expressed confidence in the young athlete. “Young Phillip was outstanding. He’s a talented player we’ve always believed in,” Jackson remarked. He noted the challenges Baselala faces, having mostly participated in Super Rugby and team training without extensive game experience. However, Jackson remains optimistic about Baselala’s potential for long-term success in rugby.

Following the match, Baselala expressed gratitude and acknowledged his faith for providing him strength, referencing his favorite Bible verse from John 13:7, “You may not know now, but later you will understand.” He stressed his commitment to fulfilling game plans and supporting his forwards, which is vital for his performance on the field.

As Flying Fijians head coach Mick Byrne finalizes his squad for the upcoming Test series in July, Baselala stands out, particularly with first-choice halfback Frank Lomani sidelined due to injury. Byrne mentioned, “We’re keen to see Philip Baselala get some game time,” highlighting that they have been tracking his progress closely.

Baselala, originally from Solotavui, Nakasaleka in Kadavu, was touched by Byrne’s recognition. “I’m speechless, but if I get the opportunity, I won’t let it slip,” he said, showcasing his determination and readiness.

The Flying Fijians are set to face the Wallabies on July 6 in Newcastle, followed by a match against Scotland on July 12 at HFC Bank Stadium in Suva. This Test series marks the beginning of a busy international calendar for the Fijian team, which will also include participation in the Pacific Nations Cup later this year.

Baselala’s journey exemplifies resilience and ambition, particularly for such a young player. His growth and recent acknowledgments reflect a positive trajectory for both him and the Fijian Drua, instilling hope for fans and a promising future in international rugby.
