A fierce battle ignited by Pacific competition is set to take place when Moana Pasifika returns to Churchill Park in Lautoka this week to face the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua in the opening round of the Shop N Save Super Rugby Pacific competition. This match marks the start of a new season for both franchises, following a lengthy period of off-season and pre-season preparations.

Patrick Pellegrini, the first-five for Moana Pasifika, has acknowledged the strength of their opponents, highlighting the new signings that pose threats throughout the field. Despite this, he emphasized the importance of focusing on their own game plan rather than getting overly concerned with the Drua’s strategies. Pellegrini stated, “A big thing for us is to kind of focus on ourselves and not worry too much about what the Drua are doing. If we can get our game right, just do our job and let the rugby take care of itself.”

Pellegrini, who debuted for Moana Pasifika last season, carries a unique background with Tongan heritage through his mother and European Italian ancestry through his father. His insights reflect a readiness to embrace the challenge ahead.

On the other side of the field, Swire Shipping Fijian Drua player Manasa Mataele recognized the formidable presence of Moana Pasifika. He expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming match, noting the similarities in physicality and build between the two teams. Mataele remarked, “We’re really looking forward to it, knowing what they bring. Quite similar to the built and a bit of physicality, but for us, it’s focusing on what we’re really good at and obviously fine-tuning a few things, especially from the defensive side of things.”

The highly-anticipated clash between these two teams is scheduled for this Saturday at 3:30 PM, promising an exciting start to the competition. Both teams appear ready to showcase their skills and strategies, setting the stage for a thrilling season ahead.
