The Fiji Police Force is investigating allegations involving crew members from a foreign airline who reportedly experienced robbery and sexual assault in separate incidents at a Nadi nightclub early yesterday morning. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism, Viliame Gavoka, confirmed these occurrences and expressed deep concern for the victims.
According to Gavoka, two distinct incidents took place—one involving theft and the other concerning sexual assault, each affecting different crew members. Authorities have identified a suspect associated with the alleged sexual assault, who is currently being questioned.
Gavoka also addressed misinformation circulating in various international media outlets that suggested the crew members were being ‘detained’. He clarified that the crew are safe, in good health, and are currently housed at a nearby hotel designated for crew layovers. They have been advised by their headquarters to stay close to the hotel to maintain contact and assist the police with their ongoing investigation, with plans for them to return home by the end of the week.
Furthermore, Gavoka urged international media to report responsibly and avoid sensationalizing events without verified information. He acknowledged that regrettable incidents can occur anywhere, including Fiji, and he reminded tourists to exercise caution in nightlife environments and during late hours.
This incident spotlights the importance of safety in tourism hotspots and highlights the need for responsible reporting that doesn’t exacerbate fear or misinformation. As authorities investigate, maintaining an environment of care and responsibility for both locals and visitors remains crucial.
In dealing with such unfortunate situations, it’s essential to focus on support for the victims, thorough investigations to bring justice, and fostering a tourist-friendly atmosphere that prioritizes safety.
