Peniana Matai is embracing her role as a market vendor in the bustling Suva Municipal Market, determined to make the most of her daily opportunities despite facing fierce competition. Three years ago, she made a bold decision to leave her job as a casual worker, becoming the sole provider for her family, including her husband and their four children.

Matai shared that the transition to being a market vendor has not only been beneficial financially but has also introduced her to amazing people within the business community. On a successful day, she can earn around $300—substantially more than her previous bi-weekly salary. However, she navigates the challenges of fluctuating seafood prices and the sourcing efforts needed for products such as sea grapes and crabs. At the Suva market, sea grapes are priced between $2 and $5, while crabs in coconut milk are available for $5, offering reasonable options for customers.

Another successful vendor, Tokasa Wati, shares a similar journey. With over a decade of experience, she transitioned from school to farming, initially starting with watermelons before expanding to dalo farming. Located four hours from her village in Lomai Vuna, her four-acre farm now allows her to earn up to $3000 weekly during peak seasons. This income has empowered her to send her children to school and meet other family obligations. Wati emphasizes the importance of using available land to secure a prosperous future, encouraging young people to explore their surroundings for opportunities, especially if traditional academics aren’t their strong suit. Her bundles of dalo sell for $20 to $30, showcasing her resilience and resourcefulness—an inspiration for others.

Both women exemplify the spirit of entrepreneurship and determination, proving that with hard work and ingenuity, individuals can overcome obstacles and build better lives for themselves and their families. Their stories reflect a hopeful narrative of empowerment through local markets and agriculture, encouraging others in their communities to pursue similar paths to success.
