FIJI GLOBAL NEWS

Beyond the headline

A slow-moving trough of low pressure to the west of Fiji, now drifting south, will keep a moist easterly wind flow over the islands and bring periods of cloud, showers and the chance of thunderstorms through tonight. The heaviest and most frequent rain is expected across western and northern coastal districts, several outer islands and parts of the central and eastern groups, with conditions gradually easing but remaining unsettled into Sunday.

Occasional showers are forecast for the Yasawa and Mamanuca groups, Serua‑Namosi, Navua‑Suva‑Nausori, Tailevu‑Naitasiri, Ra‑Rakiraki, southern Bua and Cakaudrove provinces, Taveuni, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands, and the Lau and Lomaiviti groups through tonight. Elsewhere conditions will be partly cloudy with isolated afternoon or evening showers. Afternoon or evening thunderstorms are possible in many areas, and isolated heavy falls could produce localised flash flooding in low‑lying and flood‑prone locations.

Winds will be moderate east to southeasterly, fresh at times this evening, with seas moderate to rough. On Sunday the focus of showers will shift but many of the same areas — Serua‑Namosi, Navua‑Suva‑Nausori, Tailevu‑Naitasiri, Ra‑Rakiraki, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands, southern Bua and Cakaudrove provinces, Taveuni and the Lau and Lomaiviti groups — can still expect some showers. Elsewhere conditions should be mostly fine apart from the usual afternoon or evening showers, though isolated thunderstorms with heavy falls remain possible. Winds are forecast to be moderate to fresh easterly and gusty at times, with seas continuing moderate to rough.

Daily town forecasts reflect this unsettled pattern. Navua, Suva and Nausori can expect occasional showers with isolated heavy falls, temperatures around a minimum of 23°C and a maximum near 31°C. Nadi, Lautoka and Ba will be mostly fine apart from afternoon or evening showers and thunderstorms, with highs to about 32°C. Labasa and other northern towns may see afternoon or evening showers with isolated heavy falls; Labasa’s temperatures are near 21–32°C tonight and up to 33°C on Sunday. Other centres such as Sigatoka, Tavua/Rakiraki, Savusavu, Nabouwalu, Taveuni, Lau, Lomaiviti and Kadavu have similar chances of showers and isolated heavy falls with minima in the low‑to‑mid 20s and maxima around 30–32°C.

Rotuma remains under a moist easterly flow with a trough nearby, producing cloudy periods with brief showers and isolated thunderstorms. Moderate easterly winds and moderate seas are expected, with temperatures around 23–31°C tonight and a forecast of occasional showers and isolated thunderstorms on Sunday. Residents and visitors are advised to be aware of sudden heavy downpours and the potential for short‑lived flooding in low‑lying areas, and mariners should take care with moderate to rough sea conditions and gusty winds.
