Legoland Shanghai is set to open its doors on July 5, showcasing a miniature version of the city’s iconic waterfront and the skyline of the Lujiazui financial district, all constructed with vibrant Lego bricks. This spectacular resort will be the world’s largest Legoland to date and marks the first of its kind in China.
The park is divided into eight themed areas, including beloved themes like Ninjago, Lego Friends, and Monkie Kid, where traditional Lego elements are creatively reimagined for a larger-than-life experience. However, some guests have expressed that the scale of some attractions did not meet their expectations, as noted by a young visitor who remarked on the difference between his dreams and reality while praising the overall experience at Legoland.
Despite facing economic challenges in China such as low consumer spending and high youth unemployment, Legoland Shanghai is banking on a resurgence in domestic travel and spending on leisure activities to draw visitors. The park is operated by Merlin Entertainments, in cooperation with the local Shanghai Jinshan District government.
One of the highlights of the park is the “Miniland,” featuring intricate models of the downtown Shanghai skyline, crafted over a staggering 168,000 hours using more than 20 million bricks, all set against the historic backdrop of the Bund promenade.
Local families have begun to visit, with ticket prices starting at 319 yuan (approximately $44) during low seasons and reaching up to 599 yuan on peak days. Initial reactions from attendees describe a joyful atmosphere, emphasizing the enthusiastic staff and the excitement surrounding the new attractions.
Legoland Shanghai represents a significant addition to the city’s entertainment landscape, providing families with a new destination for fun and creativity. It highlights the resilience of the global park industry, as operators strive to tap into the emerging market of experience-based leisure amid economic fluctuations. The park’s focus on interactive experiences aims to foster a new wave of community engagement and enjoyment, contributing positively to local tourism and the economy.
With its grand opening approaching, Legoland Shanghai will not only serve as a celebration of creativity but also as a hopeful reminder of the potential for recovery and growth in leisure and entertainment sectors around the world.
