Kaiming Agro Processing Ltd, located in Navua, has made noteworthy strides in support of its female employees by inaugurating a new accommodation facility to commemorate International Women’s Day. The dormitory, featuring 16 beds, was developed in partnership with the Pacific Horticultural and Agricultural Market Access Plus (PHAMA Plus) Program, backed by Australia and New Zealand. The facility is designed to provide a safe and comfortable space for female workers who frequently commute long distances for employment.
With around 130 out of a total of 180 employees being women, Kaiming Agro demonstrates a strong commitment to gender representation across all levels, from production roles to leadership positions. Founder Calvin Qiu emphasized the significance of fostering a supportive work environment, particularly for female staff.
Alongside the new accommodation, Kaiming Agro has put into place a Workplace Domestic Violence Policy. This initiative includes critical resources such as leave provisions, salary advances, and safe accommodation options, ensuring that employees feel secure and supported in their roles. Elina Tawayaga, the factory administrator and Domestic Violence Focal Point, noted that the policy empowers women by providing them with the assurance that help is available when needed.
The initiative has garnered praise from officials such as Emily Wilson, First Secretary for Economic, Trade, and Development at the Australian High Commission, who highlighted that such investments not only enhance employee well-being but also drive business growth and productivity. Jane Anderson from the New Zealand High Commission similarly acknowledged Kaiming Agro’s dedication to a gender-inclusive workplace, emphasizing that these efforts are crucial for accelerating women’s economic empowerment.
This initiative reflects the broader movement in Fiji aimed at addressing gender inequalities and supporting female empowerment within various sectors like agriculture.
