At 108 years old, Jamiran Bi is a living testament to the resilience embodied by the descendants of Girmitiyas, the indentured laborers brought from India over a century ago. Recently, she was honored at Subrail Park in Labasa during a Gerimit remembrance event, where she received a plaque and shawl acknowledging her family’s rich heritage and connection to this pivotal part of Fijian history.

Her daughter, Rojina Bi, shared stories of their grandfather who settled in Tabia after migrating under the indenture system, noting the challenging life he faced. “He never gave up, even when things were really tough,” Ms. Bi reflected, underscoring the perseverance required of those who toiled in the sugarcane industry. This recognition by the government serves not only to honor her grandfather’s contributions to Fiji’s economy but also highlights the ongoing commitment to preserving the narratives of the Girmitiyas and their descendants.

Jamiran Bi’s story resonates with other recent commemorations reflecting on the sacrifices of the Girmitiyas, who came to Fiji under difficult circumstances. Similar sentiments were expressed during celebrations that honored over 150 senior descendants for their significant contributions, emphasizing collective strength and unity among Fiji’s diverse communities. Events from May 10 to 12 will feature oratory contests, cultural activities, and a replica of the ship Leonidas, commemorating the journey of these laborers.

These narratives collectively invoke a spirit of remembrance and hope. The Girmit Day celebrations, themed “Preserving the Past, Envisioning the Future,” aim to honor this heritage while fostering cultural unity and inclusion among all Fijians. As communities engage with these histories, there is a prevailing hope that stories of struggle and perseverance will inspire future generations, reinforcing the spirit and cultural tapestry of Fiji.
