Legacy Unveiled: A Journey Through Fiji’s Family Ties

Caroline Datsopoulos recently visited The Fiji Times, a newspaper founded by her great-grandfather, George Littleton Griffiths, in 1869. This visit was significant for Caroline, who traveled to Fiji for the first time despite her family’s long history in the nation. She is part of the Griffiths legacy, which has been foundational in the journalistic landscape of Fiji, and this connection was further cemented during her reunion with her cousin, Harold Koi, who works as a sub-editor at The Fiji Times.

During her time in Fiji, Caroline brought along an album of old photographs belonging to her grandmother, Ciwa, which stirred emotions as she considered her family’s past. Caroline is a descendant of Griffiths, who played a vital role in Fiji’s history, including the care of Koi, who arrived from Bougainville as a young boy. Griffiths helped many individuals during a challenging period marked by the hardships of blackbirding and indenture.

Reflecting on their family histories, Caroline and Harold visited the gravesite of George Littleton Griffiths in the old Suva Cemetery. This site is a physical representation of their family’s profound impact on the formation of Fiji’s society. The visit prompted reflections on their ancestors’ intertwined journeys through history, marked by both struggle and resilience.

As they stood together at Griffiths’ grave, surrounded by the lush landscape that would have once been less developed, they contemplated their ancestors’ legacies. George Griffiths was known for his generosity, particularly in taking in children in need, including the then young Satina Griffiths, adopted into the family after arriving in Fiji.

This personal connection to the past is shared by many in Fiji. Caroline’s story resonates with broader themes of identity, legacy, and resilience. It emphasizes the importance of family history and the connections that continue to shape lives today. This visit, which she described as a means to bridge her family’s past with the present, showcases the enduring bonds that generations form through shared experiences and history.

This experience not only underscores the significance of familial connections but also sheds light on the rich tapestry of Fiji’s heritage. Caroline’s commitment to documenting her journey through a photo book aims to preserve her family’s history for future generations, ensuring their legacy continues to inspire hope and connection in a diverse society.

Recognizing our roots helps foster a sense of belonging and community, which is crucial for cultural continuity—a sentiment that Caroline embodies through her journey of discovery in Fiji.
