Murder suspect Epeli Laqeni has been granted bail under strict conditions by Justice Usaia Ratuvili in the High Court in Suva, allowing him to refrain from any interference with State witnesses until the conclusion of his trial. The bail, set at $5,000 non-cash, comes as Mr. Laqeni faces murder charges related to the death of his de facto partner in September of the previous year in Nakasi, Nausori.

In seeking bail, the former corrections officer expressed a need for medical treatment to regain his mobility, as he is currently wheelchair-bound. He highlighted concerns that ongoing detention could lead to lasting impairment. Furthermore, Mr. Laqeni alleged that he has faced harassment from the deceased’s husband, a senior corrections officer.

As part of the bail process, Mr. Laqeni’s two sureties have been reminded of their responsibilities and the consequences of his failure to appear in court. The case has been scheduled to be recalled on March 24, where further developments are anticipated.

The granting of bail under particular conditions indicates that the court is allowing for the necessity of medical care while also ensuring that the legal process is upheld and that witnesses remain protected. As the trial approaches, the focus will be on the legal proceedings and the pursuit of justice in this sensitive case.
