The Great Council of Chiefs (GCC) has expressed its continued support for the establishment of a Colo North Province, a proposal stemming from the Native Lands Commission’s (NLC) operational review. According to GCC Chair Ratu Viliame Seruvakula, the creation of this province aims to enhance support and facilitate development for highland communities that have historically faced neglect.
Ratu Seruvakula emphasized that concerns regarding a lack of development in highland areas were raised during the NLC’s review, highlighting the need for focused attention on these communities. He noted that the region known as Colo North previously extended from Matailobau to the coastal areas of Ba but was later divided into the provinces as they are currently configured.
The establishment of Colo North as a distinct province is expected to streamline development initiatives, making them more efficient and accessible. Ratu Viliame reassured that this change would not disrupt the established relationships among the districts that are currently grouped under existing provinces.
However, he acknowledged that the road to establishing Colo North would not be straightforward. The process will require extensive consultation, particularly regarding land ownership issues and the legal implications of such a transition. Ratu Viliame also mentioned that the Ministry of iTaukei Affairs is in the process of reviewing this recommendation, indicating that steps toward realizing this proposal are underway.
The establishment of a new province could mark a significant step towards empowering communities that have long been overlooked, bringing new opportunities and support to the residents of Colo North.
