From Adversity to Triumph: How Football is Changing Lives in Fiji

FIFA’s “Football for Schools” (F4S) program aims to blend football with education, providing children with opportunities to learn essential life skills through enjoyable football activities. A remarkable success story from this initiative is that of Adi Ulamila Reva, a Fijian teenager demonstrating how F4S can transform lives.

Adi’s journey took a pivotal turn on November 17, 2023, during the launch of F4S at Varavu Muslim Primary School in Ba. Despite facing personal challenges, including the passing of her father and the responsibility of helping her family by picking coconuts, Adi shone on that day, earning recognition not only for her football skills but also for her life skills.

In just 18 months, at just 14 years old, Adi has already achieved significant milestones. She has traveled extensively for football, trains with the Fiji FA Academy, and has represented Fiji in the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup qualifiers. Recently, she joined FC Ba, a prominent club participating in the OFC Women Champions League.

Off the field, Adi’s life has changed dramatically. Her football achievements have enabled her to attain an education at Xavier College in Ba, one of Fiji’s top schools. Reflecting on her journey, Adi credited the support from F4S and former Fiji FA technical director Timo Jankowski for helping her navigate through challenging times and pursue her football dreams.

Adi’s story highlights the significance of family support, as she expressed immense gratitude towards her mother, who has been her biggest motivator. Despite their hardships, her mother encourages her to train and pursue her ambitions. This support underscores the importance of familial bonds in striving for success.

Moreover, Adi sees the social benefits of participating in football, emphasizing the joy of connecting with others and experiencing new places. Encouraging other young girls facing similar restrictions, especially in conservative environments, she passionately advocates for persistence in pursuing their dreams.

Looking ahead, Adi aims to represent Fiji in the upcoming OFC U-16 Women’s Championship, where success could lead to Fiji’s first appearance in the expanded FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup next year. Adi’s journey exemplifies the transformative power of sports within vulnerable communities and points to the significant impact FIFA’s support can have in fostering young talent in less developed countries like Fiji.

Overall, Adi’s inspiring story is not just one of personal triumph but also a testament to the potential that lies within young athletes when given the right guidance and support.
