Minister for Sugar Industry and Multiethnic Affairs, Charan Jeath Singh, has responded to recent allegations regarding the dismissal of acting permanent secretary Reshmi Kumari. Singh affirmed that the selection of a new permanent secretary was conducted transparently, following a thorough recruitment process led by the Public Service Commission (PSC).
In his clarification, Singh stated, “The position was formally advertised, and everyone was given a fair opportunity to apply,” highlighting the involvement of PwC, the accounting firm, in the interview and selection process. Ultimately, Dr. Vinesh Kumar was appointed to the role of permanent secretary, a decision that had been discussed with PSC Chair, Luke Rokovada.
While acknowledging that there had been differences between him and Kumari, Singh emphasized that these issues did not influence the final decision regarding the appointment. Dr. Vinesh Kumar, who is taking on the role, is currently the CEO of the Sugar Research Institute of Fiji.
This development reflects ongoing initiatives to enhance governance within Fiji’s sugar industry, particularly following previous public disagreements between Singh and Kumari that were widely circulated on social media. The ministry is optimistic that the appointment of Dr. Kumar will lead to improved communication and transparency, fostering a more effective partnership with stakeholders in the sector.
As the sugar industry faces challenges, including production decline, Singh’s leadership and the new appointment may serve as a pivotal moment for reinvigorating the sector and strengthening relationships with local farmers and communities.
