Eswa Nadan, widely known in Fiji’s football community four decades ago, continues to contribute to the sport, recently receiving recognition from the Fiji Football Association. At 58 years old, Nadan, a former standout for Nadi and the national team, now lives in Sydney, Australia, where he runs a thriving air-conditioning and refrigeration business. He was inducted into the Fiji FA Legends Programme during a ceremony in Nadi on December 1.

Nadan’s journey in football began in primary school in 1977, and he aims to leave a lasting legacy in the sport. He recalled a pivotal moment when he scored the decisive goal for Nadi Sangam Primary in a local competition, igniting his passion for the game. Although he was initially focused on academics in high school, friends encouraged him to join their village team in the local league, where he achieved remarkable success, including leading Navo Sports Club to an unbeaten season and promotion to the senior division.

Nadan’s commitment intensified when he trained with the Nadi district team, sharing the field with many national representatives. He made his debut for Nadi in 1987 with a goal in a victory against Suva. One of his most memorable achievements was scoring the winning goal against Lautoka, thereby ending their 15-match unbeaten streak, a moment he treasures.

Throughout his career, Nadan became known for his striking abilities, often scoring against tough opponents. He enjoyed a fruitful partnership with striking teammate Rusiate Waqan and faced many challenges from formidable defenders like Abraham Watkins. After his playing career was cut short due to injuries, he shifted his focus to coaching and youth development, guiding teams to significant victories, including a win over New Zealand in a tournament final.

After moving to Australia in 2001, Nadan established the Nadi Veterans Club, which has participated in various competitions, including international tournaments. He recently took on the role of Head Coach for the Australia Fiji Football Incorporated (AuFFI) All Stars in the Pacific Cup in Fiji, highlighting his dedication to football development in the diaspora.

Nadan attributes his success to the support of his family, including his wife Shalini and their two children. His induction as the 82nd legend in the Fiji FA Legends Club was a meaningful occasion, celebrated alongside his family, friends, and former colleagues in the sport. He expresses a commitment to uniting the Fijian community in Australia through football and looks forward to initiatives like an upcoming U16 competition, which promises to foster youth talent in the sport.

Nadan’s story is an inspiration, showcasing the profound impact of football not only on individual lives but also on communities. His efforts to encourage an active lifestyle among his peers exemplify his dedication to both the sport and the well-being of those around him.

This article serves not just as a tribute to Nadan’s contributions but also as a reminder of the unifying power of sports, particularly in fostering connections within the Fijian diaspora.
