The Ministry of Education in Fiji announced that all schools within the Western Division will remain closed due to ongoing heavy rainfall and significant flooding. Minister for Education Aseri Radrodro made this decision following consultations with the National Disaster Risk Management Office (NDRMO) and local authorities.
Concerns regarding flooding in low-lying areas, unsafe road conditions, and rising river levels contributed to the closure. In contrast, schools in the Eastern, Northern, and Central Divisions are set to open on Tuesday, March 3, 2026. However, parents and guardians are advised to consider the safety of their children and have the final say on whether to send them to school, especially those in flood-affected or high-risk locations where access may still pose dangers.
The Ministry has reminded parents to ensure their children do not attempt to cross flooded roads, creeks, or rivers, and to limit travel in affected areas. Close supervision of young individuals is also encouraged while staying updated on official weather advisories.
School administrators have been instructed to work closely with their Management Committees and District Education Offices to assess school grounds and facilities before resuming full operations. The safety and wellbeing of students, teachers, and families are paramount, and the Ministry will continue to provide updates as conditions progress.
