Fiji is currently grappling with significant human rights challenges that require urgent intervention. Key issues include police violence, gender-based violence, child abuse, poverty, discrimination, and the exploitation of workers, particularly migrant laborers. The adverse impacts of climate change also pose a considerable threat, disproportionately affecting vulnerable groups such as women, children, persons with disabilities, LGBTI individuals, and marginalized communities.
Pravesh Sharma, chair of the Human Rights and Anti Discrimination Commission (HRADC), has underscored the necessity for prompt action, warning that procrastination will only exacerbate inequalities and undermine the dignity and well-being of citizens. He stressed that human rights are not optional but rather essential obligations that must be met through tangible action.
Sharma pointed out that poverty transcends mere lack of resources—it reflects a broader denial of basic human rights. Similarly, climate change is framed not just as an environmental concern but as a human rights crisis that threatens the livelihoods and futures of many Fijians. He emphasized the pressing need for improvements in public health care services to ensure that essential treatment is accessible.
As Human Rights Day approaches, Sharma urges policymakers, civil society, and all Fijians to take decisive actions to tackle these critical human rights issues. He advocates for prioritizing the protection of those at greatest risk and ensuring that fundamental rights—including safety, equality, health, education, and livelihoods—are guaranteed for everyone.
This year’s theme, “Our Rights, Our Future, Right Now,” serves as a powerful call to action, emphasizing that immediate attention to human rights challenges is crucial. Sharma asserted that the choices made today will shape the future of human rights not just in Fiji but in the wider region as well.
In light of these pressing issues, there is a hopeful opportunity for Fijians to come together and push for meaningful change, showcasing resilience and solidarity in the face of adversity. Collective action can pave the way for a brighter future where the rights of all individuals are respected and upheld.
