Customs in Fiji is undergoing a comprehensive modernization effort aimed at keeping pace with the demands of global trade, travel, and the increasing flow of people. Minister for Finance Esrom Immanuel highlighted that this transformation is grounded in intelligence-led and technology-enabled methods, allowing border agencies to enhance their effectiveness in combating the trafficking of illicit and smuggled goods.

Key initiatives currently being implemented include the establishment of a container examination facility designed to improve non-intrusive inspection capabilities. The introduction of a National Single Window system is also underway, which will streamline trade processes and boost compliance among stakeholders. Furthermore, the procurement of advanced surveillance and monitoring equipment will aid in enhancing risk detection at the borders.

Minister Immanuel, speaking at the International Customs Day event in Suva last Thursday, emphasized that these efforts are bolstered by the development of a coastal maritime strategy and reinforced governance committees, which aim to ensure effective coordination among all key border and enforcement stakeholders. He noted that these reforms reposition Customs not merely as a regulatory body but as a modern, intelligence-driven institution that plays a vital role in protecting society while facilitating legitimate trade and contributing to economic growth.

In his address, Mr. Immanuel praised customs officers for their crucial but often unseen work, which significantly contributes to safer communities, secured borders, and a robust economy. He acknowledged the pressures faced by customs personnel, noting that their dedication allows legitimate trade to flow smoothly while potential threats are intercepted.

Encouraging a continued commitment to service with honor, professionalism, and integrity, he called for vigilance against evolving threats. At the conclusion of the event, 20 customs officers and external partners were honored with the World Customs Organization (WCO) Certificate of Merit, acknowledging their adherence to the highest standards of customs service, including vigilance and integrity in safeguarding society.

This modernization initiative signifies a proactive step towards enhancing Fiji’s customs capabilities, laying the groundwork for a more secure and efficient future in border management and trade facilitation while promising to uplift the nation’s economic landscape.
