Pacific Games gold medalist Hansel McCaig has achieved a remarkable feat by setting a new national record in the men’s 100 meters medley. He clocked an impressive time of 57.31 seconds during the World Aquatics Swimming Championships held in Budapest, Hungary last week. McCaig was among three Fijian swimmers who competed at the prestigious event, alongside Marseleima Moss and U.S.-based David Young. Notably, Young also made waves at the championships by establishing a national record in the men’s 50m butterfly.
In addition to these athletic achievements, Fiji Swimming president Lucy Erasito and Eugene Panuve presented a comprehensive strategic plan to World Aquatics, which outlines their objectives for the next four years. This plan was the culmination of a nine-month collaboration with the International Federation as part of a mentorship initiative aimed at aligning Fiji Swimming’s goals with global standards.
Fiji Swimming engaged stakeholders in workshops to refine their mission, vision, and values, ultimately successfully delivering their strategic goals to World Aquatics. The experience offered valuable insights and highlighted the common challenges faced by national federations, regardless of their size or infrastructure.
The Fiji Swimming board expressed gratitude to the previous leadership for establishing a solid foundation and commended the current board for steering the organization toward a shared vision. Their commitment remains focused on prioritizing the needs and development of athletes, ensuring a strong future for swimming in Fiji.
This story reflects not only the triumph of individual athletes but also emphasizes the collaborative efforts to enhance the sport at a national level, paving the way for future successes. The dedication to nurturing athletes aligns with the broader goals of fostering a strong sporting community in Fiji, signaling a bright future for swimming and other sports in the region.
