The Land Transport Authority (LTA) of Fiji has called attention to the critical need for road safety following the heartbreaking death of 14-year-old Eliki Delai, who tragically lost his life in an accident while trying to board a bus in Tavua. LTA Chief Executive Officer Irimaia Rokosawa expressed deep sorrow over this avoidable incident and stressed that drivers bear the responsibility of ensuring the safety of all passengers before moving their vehicles.

According to preliminary reports from the Fiji Police Force, Eliki was en route to Tavua town when the accident occurred early in the morning. After the bus made a stop, he got off to let other passengers disembark. Unfortunately, as the bus started to move again, he attempted to get back on but slipped, leading to the tragic event.

In response to this incident, Rokosawa urged all Public Service Vehicle (PSV) drivers to remain vigilant and ensure that passengers are either securely seated or have completely exited the vehicle prior to driving off. He underscored the importance of avoiding unsafe stops, such as in the middle of the road or at busy intersections.

Rokosawa’s comments highlight a broader message regarding the collective responsibility of road safety among drivers, pedestrians, and passengers alike. He noted that road safety starts with each person’s commitment to exercising caution, especially in high-traffic areas, such as schools and residential neighborhoods. “One life lost is one too many,” he stated, advocating for a vital cultural shift toward prioritizing road safety.

This tragic incident serves as a poignant reminder of the dangers that can arise on roadways. It calls on both drivers and passengers to actively engage in maintaining safety during travel. With increased awareness and a dedication to following road safety measures, there is optimism that such heartbreaking events can be prevented in the future, ultimately leading to a safer transportation environment for all.
