Fiji’s Rising Rugby Star: Meet Philip Baselala!

Fijian Drua head coach Glen Jackson has expressed high expectations for rising star Philip Baselala following his impressive debut as a starting halfback. The 20-year-old showcased his talent in a commanding 38-7 victory over the Western Force last weekend. Jackson’s acknowledgment of Baselala’s potential stemmed from the young player’s remarkable performance, which came despite the challenges of limited game time in a competitive environment.

Jackson remarked, “I thought young Phillip was outstanding. He’s a young man that we always knew was going to be a talented player, but as a 20-year-old, it’s very hard to find rugby for a man that plays only Super Rugby and trains for us.” His high praise reflects a belief that Baselala possesses the skills and determination necessary to thrive at this level.

Baselala, who has faced obstacles in his early career due to injuries, has made the most of his opportunities. The Drua are currently on a bye week but will resume action against the Reds in the final round of the 2025 Shop N Save Super Rugby Pacific season.

Earlier articles highlighted Baselala’s journey, from his commitment to competing for a top-three position among halfbacks to his resilience in overcoming multiple injuries. His determination to improve has captured the attention of fans and teammates alike, fostering a supportive competitive environment within the Drua squad.

The potential of young athletes like Baselala to emerge and make a significant impact in rugby is encouraging for both fans and the team alike. With a blend of youthful energy and experienced leadership, the Drua may be on the cusp of an exciting season, driven by the promise of talent and growth from its emerging stars.
