Women are now outnumbering men in the newsrooms of Fiji, marking a significant shift in a sector previously dominated by males. Fijian Media Association (FMA) general-secretary Stanley Simpson described this change as “natural justice” in a media landscape that has long favored men. Speaking at the recent inaugural Women in Media Fiji (WiM) conference, he emphasized that the increasing presence of women in journalism reflects their commitment and ability to tackle challenges within the profession.

Simpson noted, “Maybe it’s some kind of natural justice. We’ve been dominating the newsrooms for many years.” He stressed the importance of maintaining high journalistic standards as more women contribute to media coverage in Fiji.

Focusing on women’s involvement, FMA president and WiM co-founder Rosi Doviverata highlighted the current mission to strengthen the skills and confidence of female journalists. During a recent survey, many female journalists expressed a desire for encouragement and support to navigate the industry’s challenges.

In tandem with these developments, previous discussions at various summits, including the 7th Pacific Islands News Association (PINA) Summit, have underscored the importance of mentorship and collaboration among gender-focused advocates in media. Doviverata expressed gratitude for the support received from their male counterparts and urged others in the region to foster supportive environments for emerging female journalists.

The Women’s In Media Training program that accompanied the PINA Summit gathered participants from across the Pacific to discuss gender policies and challenges, culminating in recommendations for improving working conditions and increasing leadership opportunities for women journalists. This effort reflects a broader commitment to gender equality in media.

The narrative of women gaining ground in Fiji’s media sector is not only encouraging but indicative of a thriving and evolving professional environment that embraces diversity. With ongoing support, mentorship, and the establishment of safe spaces for dialogue, the future looks hopeful for women in Fiji’s journalism landscape.
