Fiji’s Health Minister, Dr. Antonio Lalabalavu, has highlighted the urgent need for Front-of-Pack Nutrition Labelling to combat rising obesity rates and diet-related diseases in the nation. Alarmingly, over 67% of Fijian adults are either overweight or obese, with childhood obesity rates on the rise. Dr. Lalabalavu emphasized that the current public health crisis stems primarily from poor dietary choices and aggressive advertising of unhealthy food products.

During a recent workshop, he stated that clear front-of-pack labels indicating high levels of sugar, salt, and unhealthy fats are necessary to allow consumers to make informed choices quickly. However, he noted critical gaps in Fiji’s regulatory framework, including an outdated Food Safety Act lacking a mandatory premarket product registration system, which hampers effective enforcement of labelling standards.

Dr. Lalabalavu pointed out that existing marketing restrictions only protect infants and toddlers and leave older children vulnerable to unhealthy food advertising, especially via cartoons and social media. He also criticized the influence of food industry representatives on advisory bodies, asserting that health experts and civil society must have a greater voice in shaping food policies.

The recent two-day workshop aimed at identifying legal and enforcement weaknesses in food labelling and marketing to drive actionable improvements in public health. This initiative is part of the broader Wellness Fiji agenda, aimed at improving community health outcomes and reversing alarming trends in diet-related diseases.

The emphasis on nutritional education and the push for effective labelling can cultivate a more informed consumer base, potentially leading to healthier dietary practices among Fijians. The situation remains critical, but there is hope as both government leaders and community advocates work collaboratively toward a healthier future for Fiji, signaling a positive shift in public health focus.

Overall, Fiji’s dedication to improving food labelling and promoting healthier dietary habits offers a promising avenue for reversing the growing health crisis.
