The 2026 Extra Premier League season is set to kick off on the weekend of February 21-22, ushering in a jam-packed domestic football calendar in Fiji, under the guidance of the Fiji Football Association (FFA). Mohamed Yusuf, the FFA’s CEO, has underscored the urgency of adhering to the planned timetable due to approaching international and domestic engagements.
“There is absolutely no room for postponement,” Yusuf asserted, stressing the importance of maintaining the league’s momentum. The season is required to wrap up by September 30, allowing Fiji to host the Prime Minister’s Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) Cup, followed by the FMF Inter-District Championship (IDC).
While discussions concerning home grounds are progressing, most clubs have settled on their venues, although southern teams will play at alternative locations due to the unavailability of specific stadiums. Yusuf noted that three grounds—HFC Bank National Stadium, Ratu Cakobau Park, and the site of disturbances in Navua—have been impacted, potentially necessitating double headers to fulfill the schedule.
Despite the challenges, Yusuf remains optimistic about the league running smoothly. “We have put the grounds according to some negotiations and talks still going on but hopefully we will be able to do all of this as soon as we reach the schedule,” he said.
The competition will commence with a series of matches in early March, pausing for the FIFA international window, during which Regional League competitions will occur, before resuming after Easter with round six starting on April 24. The season is designed to extend through May, incorporating a mid-season transfer window from June 1 to June 15.
Fans can anticipate exciting clashes, as numerous teams are bolstering their rosters with new talent. Key teams highlighted by Yusuf include Bar and Lautoka, both of which are expected to have strong lineups, while Nadi will welcome foreign players. Navua aims to leverage their home ground this year, with Rewa and Nasinu also enhancing their teams.
As the FFA prepares for a demanding season ahead, their focus remains on overcoming venue challenges while ensuring a successful Extra Premier League season in anticipation of Fiji’s significant football events later this year. The commitment of teams and the league’s organization signals an exciting time for football fans in Fiji, promising an engaging and competitive atmosphere as the league unfolds.
