The Fiji Corrections Services (FCS) has initiated a significant Job Evaluation Exercise (JEE), which has led to the creation of 81 new positions within administration, technical, and ranking officer categories. This initiative received approval from the Cabinet and was subsequently backed by Parliament through the current financial year’s national budget.

During a parliamentary session, Minister for Justice Siromi Turaga clarified that the traditional concepts of promotion and demotion will no longer be applicable within the department. Instead, shifts in rank will be determined by the roles that officers take on, influenced by their performance and the requirements of the organization.

Mr. Turaga emphasized the importance of this realignment, stating it not only updates Human Resources policies but also better identifies personnel needs, enabling the effective integration of these new roles over the next three financial years. He acknowledged the necessity of continuously refining the pay structures to match the experience and qualifications required for various roles, which has not been done comprehensively in approximately 40 years.

Mr. Turaga also noted that the JEE has provided clarity on job descriptions across various officer roles and has led to the development of an organizational chart that reflects these new positions—a process that he indicated was overlooked in previous administrations.

This strategic realignment presents a hopeful future for the Fiji Corrections Services, as it lays the groundwork for a more efficient, well-defined, and performance-oriented organization. The proactive approach being taken now is a refreshing change that could significantly enhance the operational effectiveness of the FCS moving forward.

In summary, the FCS is embracing a new era of organization with the creation of 81 positions, prioritizing performance and strategic role definitions, and marking a significant update to its operational structure.
